Help!

Filed under: life — by ichabodisitchy @ 9:20 pm

My 14-year old stepson came home from school last Friday, complaining of a ‘slight tummy-ache’. He didn’t seem all that ill and we insisted on his at least trying a little of the chili-con-carne Lewis had slaved over the stove to make. Admittedly, we did feel somewhat guilty two hours later as the poor lad was puking his guts up all over the landing floor…

Needless to say, as soon as we had relocated the vomiting wonder-boy to the bathroom, positioned his head over the loo, patted his head and said ‘there there’, we got out the bucket, put on some gloves and cleaned up the mess (well, I say we but Lewis did it all really). But even though all visible signs of the sick have gone, its spirit lives on. Despite all our scrubbing and ‘shake ‘n’ vac’-ing, the smell has lingered. It assaults your nostrils every time you wander up the stairs and hangs about the house like a guest that has frankly outstayed its welcome.

Help! What can we do to get rid of it?

  1. I have no idea about on carpets, but bicarbonate of soda is brilliant for absorbing odours just about anywhere else. I use it in our kitchen compost bucket and for wiping out the microwave and fridge and nary an odour is left. Suggest you tip some out on the offending spot, leave for a bit and then vacuum up. Oh, I just checked over at the WEN website and they list bicarb and cornstarch as good carpet deodorizers; check http://www.wen.org.uk/health/Reports/Household_cleaning_factsheet.pdf

  2. You need Susan! I just know she will know what to do.
    I haven’t a clue I’m afraid.
Equaiano’s solution sounds worth a try though. I would just squirt that perfume around that someone gave me for xmas 4 years ago and that I’d never used — but still I would smell the sick I am sure.
send for a Susan alert, that’s what I;d do these days!

  3. Maxine is so kind! I was running for my copy of “Superwoman” (Shirley Conran) before I read Maxine’s comments. Here’s what Shirley Conran has to say:

“Sponge with borax solution. If on a carpet remove vomit with a cloth, then squirt with soda syphon to get rid of smell. Rinse cloth, then boil in saucepan of water with 1 tablespoon vinegar. This removes smell and is also good for sleezy face cloths.”

Personally, I’d be tempted to apply a large amount of powdered cloves mixed with baking soda, leave on and vacuum up much later. The vomit odor might still be around but the cloves could overpower it. Good luck, Sian!
